COSI – Center of Science and Industry
Dynamic science topics are introduced to the entire school with a high energy interactive assembly presentation adapted for the grade levels of the participants. The assembly is followed by exciting hands-on activities which enhance problem solving and science inquiry skills and encourage teamwork, in this day-long science experience. Volunteers are asked to run each “lab” station. No science experience is required or needed.
Hospitality
The PTA is responsible for coordinating snacks provided for teachers during parent conferences and teacher meetings, and for students during testing. We also provide a treat each month for teachers celebrating birthdays.
Longest Yard Sale
The Longest Yard Sale takes place the first weekend in August and runs 630 miles along US Highway 127. New Haven sits on a perfect spot of this highway. In 2008, we raised approximately $5,000 for our school. You can be involved by donating items for sale at the New Haven booth, volunteering, or renting a booth.
Junior Achievement
Junior Achievement uses hands-on experience to help young people understand the economics of life. In partnership with business and educators, Junior Achievement’s hands-on, experiential programs teach the key concepts of work readiness, entrepreneurship and financial literacy to young people all over the world.
Kentucky Kids' Day
Kentucky PTA Kids' Day was established in 1985 to set aside one day just for our students. The goal is to send the message to each child that he or she is a special and unique individual who is respected and loved. Kentucky PTA Kids' Day also serves as a day to make the public aware of the educational and personal needs of children and the role they play as our most important natural resource.
Odyssey of the Mind
Odyssey of the Mind
is an international educational program that provides creative problem-solving opportunities for students from kindergarten through college. Team members apply their creativity to solve problems that range from building mechanical devices to presenting their own interpretation of literary classics. They then bring their solutions to competition on the local, state, and World level. Thousands of teams from throughout the U.S. and from about 25 other countries participate in the program. Volunteers are needed to oversee the program and as coaches.
PARP – Parents As Reading Partners
Parents As Reading Partners is a collaborative effort among parents, staff, and community to build a reading partnership between the home and the school. PARP is a program designed to foster the love of reading in children by asking parents to set aside fifteen minutes daily to read with their children. Learning to read is the single most important activity in a child’s education. Studies show that children who read at home are better prepared to succeed in formal education. The Parents As Reading Partners program is aimed at involving parents in the essential task of helping their children become lifelong readers.
Recycling -- New Have Tigers "CARE" (Concerned About Recycling Everywhere)
By bringing paper trash to New Haven and putting it into the Abitibi recycling bins, our New Haven Tigers and their families really show how much they care about our environment. Through everyone's efforts, New Haven won a $500 contest during the 2007/2008 school year. Keep up the great job Tigers! You are definetly making a difference in your world.
Reflections
Reflections is a cultural arts program that was established by National PTA in 1968. Students may submit entries in seven categories: literature, musical composition, photography, visual arts, dance choreography, dance performance, and film/video. Reflections entries are judged at the local level, the district level, then at the state level. Kentucky PTA winning entries are sent to National PTA. The 2008-2009 Reflections Theme Is "Wow!"
Self-Esteem
This program emphasizes the Life Skills. This year our theme is "Kindness... pass it on." Certificates are sent home to each child who is nominated and a link is added to our Kindness Chain for each act of kindness.
Special Person Day (Formerly Grandparents' Day)
This event is held annually for our Kindergarten and Fifth Grade students. The children give a performance for their special guests and present their guest with a small gift. Volunteers are needed to run the reception and also to help prepare the gifts.
Talent Show
The New Haven Idols Talent Show provides an opportunity for our students to show their unique talents. The Talent Show is a spring event; watch for details to come home with your child.
Teacher Appreciation
The National PTA established Teacher Appreciation Week as the first full week of May, during that week we supply special treats for our teachers. We also show our appreciation with luncheons for our teachers and staff at the beginning and end of the school year.
Walk-a-thon
Our fall walk-a-thon is a fun-filled day of games and activities for the students, and is New Haven's main fundraiser.
100% of all money donated stays at New Haven. The PTA is responsible for providing volunteer support for this event. |
